The following is a reason why I have given up on politicians in this country. They not only are childish cunt assholes, they act like them too !
Senate Panel Approves Gay Marriage Ban - New York Times.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Senate panel advanced a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage on Thursday as the committee chairman shouted ``good riddance'' to a Democrat who walked out of the tense session.
``If you want to leave, good riddance,'' The Senate Judiciary Chairman, Republican Arlen Specter, told Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Russell Feingold, who refused to participate because, he said, the meeting was not sufficiently open to the public.
``I've enjoyed your lecture too. See you later, Mr. Chairman,'' Feingold told the Pennsylvania senator before storming out of the private room where the meeting took place.
The testy exchange highlighted tensions over the proposal, which seeks to amend the U.S. Constitution to prevent states from recognizing same-sex marriages.
I read this article a while ago when it came out. It amazes me how this is such a fixture in our society. Is this really an issue that deserves as much attention as it gets in light of all the other crap our country is dealing with? Homeland security alone could use the attention wasted on banning gay marriage. In 40 years, it will be proven that homosexuality is genetic, and this type of discrimination will be looked upon as the type that minorities faced/still face to a lesser degree.
The whole gay marriage front bugs me. Lawmakers say it should be banned because marriage was meant for a man and a woman and it ruins the sanctity of marriage. However, marriage seems to be more or a religious issue to me. Politics shouldn't be involved. Stupidly, the government got involved with the church - which I know I don't have to remind you, are two entites that the Constitution says should remain separate - when they granted rights through marriage.
Homosexual couples are being denied rights. If churches want to ban gay marriage, fine. But I think this should be out of the government's jurisdiction.
I know this post isn't that enlightening and I know I'm not presenting an argument that hasn't been argued before. But this issue gets me fired up occassionally.
There are some churches that are becoming more open-minded, like First United Methodist. I'm a proud member I might add, althought I'm not religious. Check out this article. It's still not equality, but it's progress.
