King Kong was an absolute failure on all fronts. Except one, the movie actually made me feel incredibly emotional towards the gigantic ape (which is what they were going for, I am sure) but I also despised the rest of the cast. Which actually now that I have written that sounds about right. I have a great affection for animals while I am learning to have less affection towards humans. I couldn’t get over Adrian Brody would even consider this as a movie role. It seems a lot more appropriate to see Jack Black in the film 6as the soulless Hollywood director hunting the ape or the money, depending which way you look at it.
I don’t know where Peter Jackson went wrong after Lord of the Rings but somehow and somewhere he took an incredibly wrong turn. King Kong and gigantic animals is one thing but having Kong fight dinosaurs like some WWF wrestling match is another. I nearly laughed out loud when Kong was wrestling and prying the mouths open of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. How pathetic. How ridiculous. I can’t get over people went to see this movie, honestly. The special effects were pretty good but it seems that they spent about 70% of the budget on making Kong look spectacular while leaving the rest of the movie to look barely adequate. And the length of the thing? Christ! I really don’t know why Hollywood believes its audience wants to sit through 3 hours of Kong, or Superman, or Pirates hunting green screens. Why is every big blockbuster movie from Hollywood now three hours? I could have edited the movie down to an hour and a half, maybe even less if you took out the mind numbing moments that leave you wondering why the hell they are spending time. For example, the young stowaway boy who kept having his 20second moment of babble? Or the endless battles with the captain of the ship that took them to Skull Island where they found Kong only to have him disappear at the end of the movie?
Other than feeling emotional towards the gigantic ape, it was cool to see NYC in the 1930’s. The subdued skyline was really interesting though expected.
